Can Melamine Foam Be Used for Water Filtration?
Open-cell melamine foam is a lightweight three-dimensional porous material that researchers can investigate as a support for filtration media, sorbent coatings or functional composites. Its porous structure may help distribute water through a test assembly, but untreated melamine foam is not a certified drinking-water filter, and pore dimensions alone do not establish removal of dissolved metals, pathogens, nanoplastics or other contaminants.
For water treatment, the key question is not simply whether a foam has small structural features: it is whether a specified material, operating under a defined process, can deliver reproducible contaminant removal with acceptable pressure drop, chemical stability and leachables.
Understanding the “100 nm” Description
Some descriptions of melamine foam refer to nanometre-scale features visible in microscopy. Such observations must be distinguished from the connected flow-through pore openings of a bulk foam. The latter determine how water and suspended particles actually move through the material. A microscopy image or a nominal nanometre feature does not by itself demonstrate 100 nm filtration cut-off.
Before publishing a retention rating, determine the relevant pore-size distribution and flow paths using an appropriate validated measurement method. Specify the foam grade, sample preparation, thickness, compression and any functional surface treatment.
Where a Melamine Foam Substrate May Be Investigated
- Support for functional sorbents: porous foam may act as a carrier for coatings or particles designed for a specific target contaminant. Performance depends on the coating, bonding and regeneration process.
- Laboratory prefiltration: a foam sample can be evaluated for trapping selected suspended matter, with particle-size-specific challenge testing and a measured pressure drop.
- Composite media research: chemically modified foam can be studied as one component in a multistage treatment system rather than as a stand-alone purification guarantee.
- Flow distribution or cushioning: an open-cell substrate may have supporting functions in a device, subject to compatibility and hygiene requirements.
Tests Required Before Making Removal Claims
| jautājums | Pierādījumi, kas jāvāc |
|---|---|
| Can the material capture specified particles? | Challenge tests with defined particle sizes, feed concentrations, throughput and replicate measurements |
| Can it remove dissolved heavy metals? | Contaminant-specific adsorption or separation data, breakthrough curves and mass balance; do not infer this from foam pore size |
| Can it remove microorganisms? | Validated microbial challenge tests, integrity controls and relevant system-level requirements |
| Does it introduce substances into water? | Extractables and leachables analysis, chemical compatibility, cleaning and ageing tests |
| Will it work in a practical filter? | Pressure drop, flow rate, loading capacity, fouling, cleaning and service-life data |
Important Limitations for Drinking-Water Applications
Do not use untreated melamine foam as a drinking-water purification device on the basis of this article. Any household or potable-water product requires qualification of the complete filter system, including material safety and applicable drinking-water standards for the intended market. No heavy-metal, pathogen, microplastic or potability removal claim is made here.
Engineering Discussion and Sample Evaluation
SINOYQX supplies melamine foam grades that can be considered for research and industrial material evaluation. Customers should provide the target substance, influent characteristics, temperature, target flow rate, allowable pressure drop, required lifetime and intended regulatory market. We can then discuss appropriate material samples and the testing that would be required.

Is a 100 nm structural feature equivalent to a 100 nm filter rating?
No. Microscopic features and effective filtration cut-off are different characteristics. Filter ratings require application-specific challenge testing.
Does bare melamine foam automatically remove dissolved heavy metals?
No such removal should be assumed. Dissolved-ion removal requires an appropriately designed separation or sorption mechanism and experimental verification.
Can melamine foam be used in a drinking-water filter?
Only after the material and complete device have passed the relevant safety and performance evaluations. This article does not establish potable-water suitability.
